Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Did I fall asleep somewhere along the way only to wake up and find myself in the first few weeks of January? Somewhere along the line I think I was just getting ready for Christmas and then suddenly it came and went with a fizzle. So how about a few random thoughts this week to keep us all going?

  1. The cold blitz took a toll at my house and as evidenced at the plumbing parts portion of the hardware store, at a number of houses in the area. By the time I got home on Sunday night I had water to the kitchen and most of the rest of the water lines in the house had been torn apart and replaced. I’ve lived here nearly 20 years and never had pipes split like they have this year. Thanks Global Warming!

  2. I received a few photos from my Minnesota friends of last week’s northern lights. Unfortunately the fog and clouds kept us from seeing one of nature’s most magnificent shows.

  3. Have you driven through Stuart lately? Work continues on the old Stuart Hotel and it now sports a beautiful neon sign. What a great addition to that small stretch of the White Pole Road. It is only too bad that the city fathers were too nearsighted to build a new city hall and library and chose to destroy the character of that block by demolishing old buildings.

  4. Is it strange that my Christmas tree is still up? I thought for sure the kids might take it down this weekend but that didn’t seem to be the case.

  5. I’m speaking this Saturday at the Iowa FFA Alumni Conference in Ankeny. It has been a few years since I’ve done any real public speaking so I need to hone up on my skills. I am too used to talking to myself lately.

  6. I’m over the cold weather in case you hadn’t figured that out. Oh sure, I could go for another snow storm or two before Spring, but if it just wants to be a muddy mess till then I’d be alright with that as well.

  7. As a State Fair aficionado, I applaud the Fair Board for listening to the customers and reversing their “tickets for food” idea. It was flawed to start with and I for one wasn’t looking forward to it. It is really a small victory and one wonders why Floppy is still stuck away in some dark basement.

  8. Max and I watched Muppets from Space the other night. There still isn’t anything better than the Muppets to cure what ails you.

  9. The only nice part about the unnerving cold has been using the crock pot for all sorts of interesting end of the day meals.

  10. Have you been planning your garden, or like me looking around the house wishing it was warm enough for a good spring cleaning?

  11. Finally this week, I don’t remember to thank people as often as I should, especially when they go above and beyond what they should, so to Gary who has spent the last two days working on water lines with me, and to all those who showed up Sunday night for the FFA/FFA Alumni meeting I say thank you from the bottom of my heart as it wouldn’t have been possible without you!

See you next week, remember…we’re all in this together.
