Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I’m usually pretty wordy by my own account. Most weeks I’m brimming with things to say and sit down in front of the computer ready to type away to my hearts content. I don’t feel that way today.

It’s been a hard weekend in Dexter and especially so for those who knew the bubbly 18 year-old girl who laughed a lot, was a crack shot, and wanted nothing more than to be an EMT. I met her first when I was serving on the fire department because her Dad and Uncle were both firemen and members of the rescue squad. She’d hang around the station, and help out at pancake supper and we watched her grow up. She wanted to join, and wanted to help people.

She took the EMT course and passed…fulfilling a dream of helping other people and she was good at it. Her caring nature and infectious smile were excellent qualities for anyone in that profession.

Saturday night, her life was cut short, and it leaves those around here with many questions and very few answers. There’s a scientific reason for her death I’m sure and yet there is nothing that can be said or written that would assuage the grief and loss of those around her. I won’t begin to know why, but to hope that her family and friends will find peace and comfort in knowing that she has been called to a higher duty and that her memory will linger with us, long after the sudden grief of her loss has begun to fade.

We will remember you Amber…

EMT Prayer
LORD,

Grant me the wisdom so that I may treat
those of your children that lay at my feet.
Let my hands be gentle, sure and swift
to impart to them your sacred gift.

Let me see only a patient's need
not their color, race or creed.
Help me always to be my best
even when it's on my hours rest.

Grant me the insight to understand why
patients of mine are going to die.
Let me remember that when they do
there is a wonderful life in Heaven with You.

Lord, if in the time of duty I should fall
help my family to hold their heads tall.
For it was You who decided that I should be
one of your chosen few, an EMT.
