Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

My head exploded today. Literally blew up. Boom! Try to follow along with me. I spent the better part of the day trying to research the new Arbor Hill wind farm going up in northern Madison and Adair counties, but that seemed more difficult than figuring out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop. I think that we are going to start finding ourselves looking at windmills like they are hog confinements….nice to have as long as they are in someone else’s back yard. Unfortunately there are few too many details that come out after it’s too late to oppose them and awfully hard to remove them once they are up. Regardless of how you feel about the issue, if you want to speak your piece there is a meeting at the Madison county courthouse on Tuesday, April 3rd at 7 p.m.

I had then wandered away from this only because I got distracted by a bag of peanut M&M’s and suddenly I hear that the Iowa DOT director now wants us to consider putting toll booths on I-80 and charging us to drive on it? Uh…say what? Oh I get it, the DOT is broke again. This seems to be an ongoing trend. Nearly ten years ago the DOT was broke and decided to “gift” the counties and cities along Highway 6 the road to take care of. That was supposed to take care of the shortfall.
Three years ago they stood up telling us that each one of us needed to pay ten cents more per gallon to help fix the deteriorated roads. TEN CENTS! That lasted for a little while and we grudgingly paid it as we watch new exits being built for the “Boom town” of Waukee and to make it easier for the western burbs to make it to Jordan Creek even if the road didn’t go anywhere for a while. And now, they seem to need more of our money to drive on roads we already pay for? Not local streets, not county blacktops and gravel roads, no not even a state highway…but a FEDERAL INTERSTATE highway that if you ask me is full of out of state speed demons, yuppies who seem to think that the Missouri river is just west of Van Meter and trucks that seem to want to draft in packs in the fast lane across this state.

No sir…if you put up a toll booth I’m more than happy to drive that four lane (or more) death trap even less than I do now. I’m done. See you next week…remember we’re all in this together.
