Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

With half opened eyes this past Sunday afternoon I thought I saw a turkey buzzard go zooming by the bedroom window, which is a sure sign of Spring. Since it seems that finally warmer weather will come and because I successfully made it through the entire Monday without someone playing an April Fools prank on me, how about some random thoughts?

  1. Last week I attended the Ames Historical Society Lecture Series. The topic was the Mayors of Ames. Very interesting and am looking forward to the next one on April 30th which will be about the Lincoln Highway. Something like this should be held locally as well. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear someone talk about history on a cold winters night?

  2. The chickens are still peeping loudly in the kitchen and are starting to get their wing feathers. They don’t care much for me sneezing and it causes a great stir in the chicken nest when I do. Funny enough, they don’t seem to pay any attention to the cats who are making whoopee under the porch at all hours of the night keeping me awake.

  3. The nice part about Spring coming when it is supposed to is that none of us has had to go mow the grass yet. Give it a couple of weeks and it will be time.

  4. I’m getting the itch to get in the garden for sure. Would be nice to have everything planted long before Memorial Day this year.

  5. I was very excited to learn that Earlham had started an FFA Alumni chapter. For those who read my column in the West Central Valley District, the first WCV FFA Alumni membership meeting will be April 11th at 7 p.m. in the Ag room of the high school. Regardless of where you live, you should get involved, and you don’t even have to be a former FFA member to join.

  6. Um…just a reminder that if you haven’t already done so, your taxes are due for filing by the 15th.

  7. Are kids today busier than when I grew up? I don’t ever remember having as many activities, but then again I was a farm kid, so maybe we just weren’t as involved in things.

  8. The best part of the post Easter glow is the fact that Peeps, Peanut Butter Eggs and all jelly beans will now be greatly reduced at the giant chain stores! Great way to feed my sugar addiction.

  9. I am always trying to help the environment and to save a little cash, so I installed those “low energy” light bulbs in my bathroom over the weekend. I’m glad I live alone because to be honest it hasn’t worked out so well. I have enough trouble seeing when it is dark, and the mood lighting as the bulbs warm up when they are first turned on isn’t helping me to improve my aim at all…if you get what I’m saying.

  10. From the “What the Heck?” file. Did you catch the news this morning that the federal government is planning on starting another “administrative department” to find waste and cut spending? Please someone tell me this is a joke. First they tried to cancel the Easter Egg Roll and now this. Seriously.

  11. Finally this week, I need to give a shout to my Wednesday night posse. I’m really not sure what that cheese was that we tried last week, but please don’t let me have any of that in the future. I know, I know…crazy to think that I’ve finally found a cheese that doesn’t like me.

See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
