Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

If I apologize in advance for random thoughts this week, please know that it’s only because my mind is still stuck on the four ham balls I had for lunch today and not because I don’t feel that you enjoy them. So here we go….

  1. Do you remember when giving someone respect was a sign of maturity and of kindness, not because it was demanded of you?
  2. The Governors race is heating up here in Iowa. Folks, I think we should prepare ourselves for a long stretch of television commercials this summer.
  3. I sat on the back deck and watched the ducks paddle across the pond the other night and as I was looking across the pasture it wasn’t very hard to picture just how deep the snow had been along the fence rows this winter.
  4. The warmer weather is nice, but do we really need mosquitoes already?
  5. The kids spent the night in the camper on Saturday night. They loved it, and even if it was just camping in the yard it made me get the urge to pull out and spend a weekend camping by my favorite lake.
  6. There will be a little construction work going on at the farm for the next couple of weeks. Max has decided to become a chicken farmer so I spent the weekend pouring over chicken coop plans. Knowing him, I’m sure he’ll corner the chicken market soon, or he will have figured out a way to use them as his pawns in his never ending quest to take over the world.
  7. Some of you may have caught the news on the possibility of a hostile takeover of Casey’s in the news this week. I’m a big fan of Casey’s, don’t get me wrong, but I have to wonder if they are in a way are the Wal Mart of small town Iowa?
  8. I’ve been working my way across Winterset the last few weeks looking for the best hamburger in town. So far Montross Pharmacy has the lead but I’ve not been everywhere in town for lunch yet. If you have a favorite drop me a line here and I’ll try it out.
  9. Where did good television go? I’ve had my fill of reality shows. And if it wasn’t for the second channel 5 that digital television has brought us, I would have never known that there used to be so many Westerns on television. I thought after Maverick, Bonanza and Roy Rogers the closest you got to a Western was F Troop.
  10. Mom came sporting a Floppy t-shirt to Easter this weekend. What great memories of growing up that brought back for me. And if you are a Floppy fan and want one, call the gift shop at the state historical museum in Des Moines and they’ll get you set up with one.
  11. I’ve struggled lately with sleeping. I’m guessing it’s just making up for those years of late nights and no naps. It’s not that I can’t nap, but sometimes making it through the entire night seems to be an uphill battle. I’ve tried warm milk, not eating close to bedtime and nothing really seems to work.
  12. Finally this week. I have found that there are days when you just can’t win. You can’t be there for everyone who needs you. And you can’t battle all the windmills. In those times I’m amazed at the people who come out of no where to lend a kind word, or a hand. For those of you out there reading this, both in print and on the world wide web, I thank you for your kindness, it has meant the world to me.

See you next week...Remember, we're all in this together.
