Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Can it really be time for us to say goodbye to another month? It seems like April just got there, or maybe it is the lack of time I’ve been spending anywhere other than work lately…So as we await the final of the April showers let’s go through a few random thoughts.

  1. Is it just me or does this spring seem windier than normal?

  2. Speaking of wind…as I write this column I can see smoke off to the west as the Stuart Sale Barn burns. It is a shame to lose any business in town, especially one that fills a generational niche in the agricultural community. Say a prayer for the owners and all involved in fighting the fire this week.

  3. I couldn’t be more proud of our local FFA members and how well they did at the State FFA Leadership Conference this past week. When they succeed we all succeed!

  4. Have you gotten most of your garden in yet? I’ve been procrastinating, but I see lots and lots of cabbage in my future. Cabbage? Why yes…this is the year I finally convince my friend from Ames to break out the sauerkraut recipe!

  5. I’m so not ready for graduation to be here.

  6. I made it out to my secret asparagus patch this week and picked what was left. It must not be such a secret anymore.

  7. I know it is warm out, and I know that we are all horribly busy trying to get the crops in the ground between rain storms, but did you know that your church has air conditioning and a darn good message every Sunday morning?

  8. I mowed the yard for the first time this weekend. Mowing can be therapeutic for me. It is as close to actually farming as I may ever get and there is something about going back and forth across the yard that gives me time to reflect on things. Until I hit some piece of iron that mysteriously found its way into the tall grass over the winter. At that point all I can think of is when will I get to Sears to buy a new blade and why don’t I just buy them by the dozen?

  9. I’m still hoping that come November there will be someone on the ballot other than these fools that we have had to deal with this year. Seriously…have we really reached the point where we may have to choose the lesser of two evils?

  10. I was reading the other day that the Treasury department is considering replacing Andrew Jackson on the twenty dollar bill with Harriet Tubman. As I was standing in line at the grocery store tonight I wondered if it really matters any more. I think after watching the three people in front of me use their debit cards or iphone to pay that the cashier was unsure what to do with my greenbacks!

  11. Finally this week…Whatever you decide to do with your life from this moment on, do it with passion. See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
