Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

After enjoying a long weekend, let’s run with a few random thoughts to get us to the weekend again.

  1. The kids and I had a rare day when our schedules were empty at the same time so after visiting a few cemeteries we decided to attend an Iowa Cubs game. I had forgotten how much the kids and I both enjoy baseball. Really is there anything better than being serenaded all the way home by the children copying the hawk of the vendors with a rousing shout of “Snoooooooow coooone!”

  2. The periods of rain and sun have been great for all the little plants in the garden. I have tasted a few days of summerlike humidity though and it didn’t take me long to decide to put the air conditioners in for the year.

  3. With the end of the school year it is time to remember that our city streets will be once again subject to the stray ball or child on a bicycle. Slow down and take it easy. And for you Mom’s out there who take a dozen phone calls a day from kids who “won’t share treats” or “is hitting me”, I feel your pain.

  4. I don’t know that I’ll ever be too old to find the discovery of a litter of kittens exciting. Unless of course they happen to be in my bedroom closet, then that’s not such a great discovery.

  5. It is hard to believe that June is almost here. That means Old Settlers, Good Egg Days and the Earlham 4th of July aren’t far off. Also not far off is sweetcorn, which is one of those things that make living in Iowa great.

  6. And Iowa’s second season is here. We have Winter and now road construction. I know we are all in a hurry and nothing irritates me more than having to sit waiting on a pilot car, but let’s all try to be a little patient. Just a reminder that Dexfield Road will be closed most of the summer. Sigh.

  7. When I cannot find a good piece of Coconut Crème pie, a root beer slushwhip will satisfy.

  8. Supposedly this is supposed to be a really good year for locusts. Luckily I haven’t heard many yet, but it is still early.

  9. Finally this week, I want to take one more moment to thank those Veterans in our communities. Your service in the name of freedom has not and will not go unnoticed. Thank you again for your service. See you next week…Remember, we’re all in this together.
