Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

You knew it was coming, so it should not be a surprise as we sit down and share a few random thoughts.

1. There are times when vacations are great but getting back to work after them can be a nightmare.

2. There was a great crowd attending Memorial Day services in Dexter on Monday. Around 150 people showed up to hear the best keynote speech I've heard in a long time. Nice weather too..just a bit on the warm side, but at least it made for a nice morning.

3. Had the opportunity to meet Cousin Kyle's new girlfriend April on Monday. You all should remember Cousin Kyle from the "Who wants to date Cousin Kyle" contest. I was a bit concerned that he was worried about her meeting the family so I tried to play it low key. It was only after some much deserved questioning about wedding plans that Kyle started to get nervous. OK, so they have only been dating two or three months, but with girlfriends so few and far between he needs to jump on this one. After all, the rest of the cousins have taken the plunge and he's the only one left, and besides..she's a keeper!

4. If you ever drive to McHenry, Illinois, ask yourself why you are going. There are few places I've visited where the phrase, you can't get there from here fits. McHenry is one of them.

5. I've heard of this crazy Iowa wine craze that has been started. Supposedly from what I understand we should all be growing grapes. I know of a couple of locals who have plans to visit every winery in Iowa. Would this make them "winos" or "winettes"? So far the hands down winner is near Runnells I am told.

6. Early indications and word on the street has the ethanol plant breaking ground this August with production scheduled to start next May.

7. Over the next couple of months there will be a number of individuals seeking out information on buildings and their former tenants in downtown Dexter. This work is being done as a study for possible application for historic registry.

8. I wonder if there is a contest in Redfield to see who will be the first one to use the new restrooms in the park? How about a silent auction?

9. Just in case you forgot..School is out for the summer. For some of us that means running back home from work to pick up the kids sitting on the porch waiting for the buss to show up.

10. Only 71 days to State Fair!!!

See you next week..Remember, we're all in this together.
