Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

It’s the first week of June…First week of June? When did June sneak up on us? Now that I’m all startled by the approaching Summer, let’s spend a little time plowing through some random thoughts shall we?

  1. School will be out soon. This is a good time to sit down with the kids and make sure they know the Summer rules, have the stranger talk with them, and make sure they all know how to dial 911 and they know their address.
  2. I’m hopeful that you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. For me, it was one where anything mechanical did not decide to cooperate. The belt on the lawn mower broke at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, well after every place that carries the right John Deere belt closes for the long weekend. The Blazer then decided to take up residence in Grandma’s yard on Sunday afternoon and I’m pretty sure that it’s the fuel pump. To top things off, Sunday afternoon as the big bass were hitting hard on the pond my reel went haywire, cutting the line which flung my new lure out into the middle of the pond. Maybe I was just supposed to sit and be quiet all weekend?
  3. The cemeteries did look nice this year. It’s always interesting to me to see the number of new and interesting headstones every year.
  4. Gooseberries are just coming in and Strawberries too from what I hear on the street. Whenever I think of strawberries I think of spending summer weekends down south of Creston eating the best strawberry pie I’ve ever had in my life.
  5. Speaking of Summer and food…if it is truly June now that means the State Fair is only two months away! You know what that means down you? Yep, Corn Dogs!
  6. Have you ever noticed how many times after you go fishing you have to wash your hands to get the fishy smell out of them? I’ve washed four times already and they still smell!
  7. I watched a television show about Hobo’s the other night. It was interesting that they talked about just how many people were riding the rails in the 1930s and 40s. I was a little startled because I think it was on a much larger scale than I had ever realized. Even today there are those that chance it to live that kind of lifestyle, which may have surprised me even more.
  8. I’ve been a heavy set guy for a while now, and really had grown comfortable in my body and it’s girth. But that darn Wii keeps calling me obese and it’s beginning to give me a complex.
  9. Did you happen to catch the replay of the Dali Lama’s visit to UNI on channel 11? Fascinating man, with a really important message to everyone regardless of what your religious beliefs are. I took away two thinks while watching it this weekend. First, that the majority of killing takes place in the world because of motivation based on religious beliefs, and secondly that we as humans get too wrapped up in finding happiness from things outside ourselves and not finding it from within.
  10. Finally this week, please remember that June 8th is primary election day in Iowa. Please take time that day to vote!

See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
