Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I spent the weekend camping and between dirty laundry and a couple of short nights of sleep, I’ve only got enough motivation and strength for some random thoughts for the week so let’s get started.

  1. Just a reminder that Redfield’s Old Settlers is this weekend. Should be a great time and the Dexfield Reunion should be an absolute blast! There will be an auction on Sunday, and among the items that I’d love to have but don’t know where I would put it is the big red Redfield arrow sign that used to hang on the triangle as you came into town. Oh, and there’s a pair of Iowa State-Iowa football tickets with parking pass too. All proceeds will go to help construct the new Legion Hall community center.
  2. Yes, Uncle Duff, I’m going to mention corn dogs and the State Fair again in my column…only 50 some days left till the Fair!
  3. I read last week in the paper about a long time Earlham resident whose dog was hit and killed by a car. Special note that if that person needs any comforting or would like to come out and play with Tucker all she needs to do is drop me a line.
  4. The kids and I were in charge of Saturday lunch for the campers, so we decided on hot dogs, bags of chips and after a trip to the Hostess store for buns, everyone got to pick out their favorite Hostess dessert too! It was a huge success and made it easy on me both in preparation and clean up!
  5. In all my years this one may actually come the closest to matching the phrase, “Knee high by the 4th of July”. At this point though, one isn’t really quite sure where your knees would end up if you stepped out into one of the local corn fields. I think it’s one of those situations where not leaving your boots out in the middle of the muck, might just persuade you to view the corn from the road.
  6. Boobazalas…those annoying horns at the World Cup soccer matches. I was flipping last weekend and landed on one of the matches and thought to myself that a swarm of killer bees had invaded the stadium. And for the record…sorry folks, soccer is a real snoozer!
  7. So Nebraska and Colorado have left the Big 12 Conference. I feel a little sadness over the move from Nebraska only because they were a charter member of the Big 6 conference, but as far as I’m concerned let them, and Colorado for that matter be someone else’s problem from now on.
  8. The only nice thing about the rain is that the gravel roads aren’t nearly as dusty as they could be this time of year.
  9. Just a reminder to all you non Goldfinch lovers out there, and those that own little patches of heaven. The thistles are getting big and probably need some attention before the county weed nazi comes rolling into your driveway. Then again, does anyone have a county weed guy anymore?
  10. Finally this week, I’ll be doing some traveling for work and if I get packed and actually make it from plane to plane in Chicago I should do alright. I’m just not sure if I’m looking forward to going, or coming back home the most. And of all the years to be gone on a dear friends’ birthday, this would have to be the year. Sorry for having to run, but I hope your 29th is a great one! I hope you all have a safe week in your own travels.

See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
