Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I’ve seen many times the signs that say “In case of emergency break glass”, however I’ve never felt the need to break glass unless it has been to inadvertently smash my reading glasses while at work or if I fall asleep in bed while reading and roll over them. But that entire thought of having something to break in case of an emergency where there is nothing more than a handle behind it that you pull, which would bring help seems somewhat appealing.

The more I thought about the fact that they put the handle to pull for help behind a piece of glass made me realize that there are times in your life when it would be much easier to pull that handle, but the glass stops you from going ahead and doing it. Breaking the glass so to speak sounds so very permanent and maybe it makes you stop and think before doing so. Do you really want to break the glass or is whatever problem that has come up something that you probably can handle on your own if you simply take a deep breath and think about your plan of attack? Or maybe you feel like breaking the glass means that you have to follow through with pulling the handle and there really isn’t any shame in that.

We all at times need that back up plan; or the fail-safe; or just a giant reset button that shouldn’t come with some sort of repercussions down the road. We all do and/or say stupid things from time to time, and heaven knows it would be nice to have that opportunity for a clean, fresh start. Even in golf you get a mulligan if you happen to shank your ball off of the tee and into the woods. Why shouldn’t we be given the same opportunity in life? More likely than not because there are those who would abuse the reset button. I suppose in a way it is something like giving a youngster a toy horn and asking them not to make any noise in church. It is certainly a special gift that we are given in forgiveness and that when we deal in God’s world that he allows us not only to have a reset button but to use it as many times as we need to. In a way HE is also our very own place where we can break the glass without thinking much about it. Wouldn’t it be nice if we as human beings could do that for each other as well? Just a thought. See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
