Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

We are Iowans and in that each of us has become hardy and accustomed to extremes in weather. From the coldest of winter days where we call in to work because the roads are simply impassable and barricade ourselves and the home from school children in our homes for the day safe and mostly warm, to the hottest of August days where the humidity from the growing corn makes you sweat like you have just finished a marathon in the walk from the house out to the mail box. We suffer through the extremes and come to enjoy the plentiful days which are perfect. Of course if one has lived long in this land, they know the old saying, “if you don’t like the weather, just wait fifteen minutes it will change!” Unfortunately, we are in the middle of one of those normal “State Fair” heat waves although coming late in the season it startles us a little and causes many to go into super protection mode of their ripening tomato plants. I thought, in order to do my weekly duty, I would give you a few ideas to keep cool as the heat attempts to bake us.

  1. Spend some time at the library. It’s cool in there, you can read a book and learn something as well.

  2. Go swimming. If you can find someplace with water in it, and if not, just turn on the garden hose. While you are at it, you could wash the car as well.

  3. Don’t touch other people. In fact stay as far away from other people as possible. Hot weather makes them cranky. That is not saying they are not cranky most of the time, but when it is hot for some reason it makes people extra cranky.

  4. Drink plenty of water. Not pop, or soda as some of you call it, and stay away from energy drinks. They will actually serve the opposite purpose. Water is your best bet to stay hydrated, although if you happen to make some fresh squeeze lemonade and have some cookies can I come and share?

  5. Go to the grocery store and stand with your head in the freezer in the ice cream section. This will cool you off, although you have to be careful not to get accosted from behind this way.

  6. Wear light colored clothing, but please wear clothing. No one wants to see you without.

  7. Have a little ice cream. Dang that sounds good, and now you’ll have to excuse me because I need to make a late night run to the grocery store for some.

  8. Sit in front of a fan. Fans are a great way to keep cool although if your fan is small you might spend more time jockeying for position if you have more than one person using the fan.

  9. Be still. Hmm…where have we heard this before? The best way to stay cool is to not move thereby not burning any calories. This would be a good time to ask the big guy to help cool things off a bit. (Oh and pray for rain)

  10. Finally, just wait a few weeks. You know in a few weeks we will have that strange yearly occurrence where you go to the game on Friday night in a t-shirt and you wake up Saturday morning looking for the blankets that have been kicked off the end of your bed. And remember, when it is the dead of winter and you are freezing to death and lying in bed at night listening to the furnace kick on and off, you complained that it was too hot.

See you next week. Remember…..we’re all in this together.
