Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

In honor of the middle of the month…how about a few random thoughts?

  1. I’ve had the itch to go to an auction lately. Its funny how cool weather for some reason makes me think of going to auctions. Maybe it’s standing around feeling my toes go numb while holding a cup of hot chocolate that I miss the most.
  2. I hadn’t been to a high school football game since 1988. It isn’t that I didn’t want to go, but just never could get excited about going after my school was gone. The streak has been broken though with a trip to Stuart to watch West Central Valley play Audubon. Good game, and it was fun, although I felt a little silly because I had to ask which side of the field the home team sits on.
  3. The crops are drying out fast. I’m hearing that there could be an issue with test weight of corn this year in some parts, but one thing is for sure, the beauty of the change of fall colors is a sight to behold. Especially the soybeans as they turn gold during this time of year.
  4. Are you sick of canning stuff from the garden yet? I’ve heard of a few who finally had enough and pulled up their tomato plants. Every year it seems as though I have great hope for the garden, but find that the weeds finally win the battle every year.
  5. My oldest daughter spent a day a couple of weeks ago tagging butterflies. It’s amazing to hear her tell the story, and wonder if the Monarch that she tagged will make it to the winter grounds in Mexico. To think of that journey and the energy that butterfly must exert is kind of amazing…especially when there are days I can’t seem to find the strength to get out of the Lazy-Boy.
  6. Apple Crisp…sweet delicious, crusty, syrupy apple crisp…..that is all…..
  7. The kids seem to be settled into school for the most part and have now gotten past the summer jitters. There are always things to be done. Homework, band practice, spelling lists.
  8. Have you done something nice for someone this week? Take time to do so.
  9. Only a few days left of being 39. I’m still waiting for the great change that will happen. I noticed that after turning 35 my body ached more and I wonder what God has planned for me now? I’m sure there’ll be plenty more adventures to come my way.
  10. Finally this week. It’s interesting to watch the debate floating around about the healthcare reform issue. Good or bad something needs to happen, but I think we need to continue to be prudent. This is not a time for rash thinking, but rather hard work to find a solution that will work for everyone, without putting this country deeper and deeper into debt.

See you next week. Remember, we’re all in this together.
