Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Well it happened when you and I weren’t paying attention. The month of September quickly swept itself into the past so let’s get ready to roll into October with a few random thoughts.

  1. How quickly we go from drought to a wealth of moisture. Any guesses on how the fall will turn out? I’m just hoping that it gets out of its system before snow sets in.

  2. Yes, I just put myself in time-out in the corner for using the word “snow”.

  3. Max and I attended the Iowa State-Baylor football game over the weekend. It amazes me how every time I go I get seated next to someone who doesn’t understand the rules of football and behind the entire seven foot plus tall Slovakian basketball team.

  4. I had determined in an earlier column that the cats had been working with the chickens to plot against me. Somehow they have made it into the house and convinced the couch to play along. I’ve tried laying on the couch the last three nights to watch a recorded PBS program and have yet to see more than the first ten minutes of it before falling asleep.

  5. Apple Crisp.

  6. I got up the other morning and sat on the end of my bed to put my socks on and the entire bed fell to the floor. It’s much easier getting into now, but I find that crawling out on the floor isn’t much fun.

  7. I’m not sure why the chickens aren’t laying eggs yet. I would have thought the feed that they are on would start production and if that didn’t work certainly their extra feeding of what the cats haven’t finished each morning should have.

  8. Remember that as field work starts there will be much more slow moving traffic on the roads. Take it easy and be sure to watch for extra large clumps of mud being left behind as well.

  9. FFA fruit sales will be starting soon. That’s a good thing, and reminds me that Christmas isn’t far away.

  10. Best comment I’ve heard this week, “My job is starting to get in the way of my life and the things I want to be doing.” Interesting concept isn’t it?

  11. Living on the torn up road by Dexter has been a ton of fun so far this year. Between the mud of the rainy days and the truck traffic that will come with harvest I will be surprised if I don’t have to replace most of the bottom half of my car before it’s done. And for what it’s worth, I’ll be really surprised if it is done by the end of the month as they have said it would be.

  12. Finally this week, I apologize for being out of sorts lately. I’m reaching that point where too many things on my plate are starting to leave me in a state of confusion as to which way is up and what actual day it is. So if you’ve dropped me a line or left a phone message and I’ve not gotten back to you, hit me up again and I’ll try to dig out from the pile of folded laundry and get right on task.

See you next week. Remember, we’re all in this together.
