Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I think in honor of all thinks spooky and creepy, it’s time for a few random thoughts.

  1. If you have a secret and you’ve never told anyone about it and it starts to come true is it fate?

  2. Don’t forget the rule of trick-or-treat…candy good…rice cakes bad.

  3. I read a really interesting book last week about the Monument men in World War II. These men were in charge of locating stolen artwork and stabilizing churches and other important cultural places during the war. Great book and who knew that Winterset’s own George Stout was a major player in this important but long forgotten piece of history.

  4. Cold weather…ughhh…wouldn’t another few weeks of 70’s be nice?

  5. Work on the house continues. It’s getting closer to being completed; well as completed as it can get until Spring rolls around but there does come a point where you just have to draw the line and decide not to tear anything else apart.

  6. I spent a few hours the other day going through some old slides I found upstairs that I had almost forgotten about. Twenty years can change people in many ways. Sure some of us are a little heavier, a little less fun and certainly have lived an interesting life, but looking back at them I see the smiles and the laughter those times brought and all of those memories came flooding back to me.

  7. So who do you agree with? The forecasters who say it will be a cold snowy winter? Or the ones who say it will be a snowy cold winter? I think it’s a loose-loose situation for us no matter what way you look at it.

  8. One thought about last Saturday….I’ve been an Iowa State fan for as long as I can remember, and as much as I enjoyed last years’ win at Nebraska, I was shocked amazed and excited about their win at Texas. SO PROUD to be a CYCLONE!

  9. Do you think the economy is turning the corner? I’m not sure yet, but I have noticed that in my travels around my sales have been up slightly over the summer. I’m not sure if it’s because the federal tax credit is ready to end or if money is becoming more available. As for me? I’m still waiting to win Powerball.

  10. Finally this week, there has been a lot of discussion the last few weeks concerning the elections coming up. You’ve read in the paper the debate in our local races and have watched debates for state offices. Do your own homework, take a minute or two to ask the candidates the questions that matter to you. I disagree with poor and attack ads, but I’ll admit they are great for the newspaper business. It’s a shame when they become personal attacks just because you disagree with the way someone votes or their view on social issues. I disagree on so many levels with what I’ve read, not only in state and web media sources but even within the columns of the Advocate, but regardless the best way to make my voice, and yours heard is to vote. For that vote is what this country was founded upon. The freedom to stand up and be counted and let your voice be heard.

See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
